Septic Tomb - Sewearth
Who would've though you could mix such genres as brutal death metal and doom? Septic Tomb has done it, and it does indeed sound pretty good. I believe Septic Tomb is the first band I've ever heard to attempt mixing these genres.
Well, when you think about it seriously, you wonder how this can be done. Doom, for the most part, comes with simplistic and slow riffs. Brutal death metal comes with fast paced and heavy riffs. Well, it's an interesting equation thats for sure. I think this type of project can go one of two ways: extremely good or extremely horrible.
Musically, Septic Tomb is interesting to say the least. Theres not very many 'fast' songs, but there are various tempos used in this ep. For the most part, Septic Tomb is slow and heavy, sometimes droning on in songs. The guitar riffs are very, very simple, so don't be expecting anything like Guttural Secrete out of this ep. The distortion and tuning used does create a heavy and dreary atmosphere, which I enjoy a lot. There is no bass used in this project, which I think is a bad idea. The bass would make this music a heck of a lot heavier. The drum programming is one of the major downfalls of the album. Septic Tomb really needs a real drummer. The drum programmer just doesn't cut it, and sounds out of place at some points. Noktorn is actually good at doing his guttural style vocals. The vocals are one of my favorite parts of this ep.

Septic Tomb is off to a good start judging this ep. Sure, the guitar lines are simplistic, and the drum programmer sucks, but these are things that can be easily fixed. I believe that the next release by Noktorn will probably stump this one, and I hope it does. I see nothing but improvement in the future for Noktorn and Septic Tomb. I'd suggest you check this project out if you're into guttural vocals, slow doom styled riffs, and endless heaviness.
